Demystifying Pick & Place Machine SpecsMore efficient production lines mean time and cost savings. The quality and configuration of your reflow ovens, wave solder machines, All In One (AIO) machines, and flying probe testers can make a difference. Accurate solder dispensing and speedy component placement are both essential, but it's also important to consider how your boards are getting from machine to machine.

We've put together a list of 5 types of SMT machines to help you further optimize your PCB handling setup.

  • Destackers & Magazine Handlers
  • Transfer Conveyors
  • FIFO Buffers
  • Diverters & Flippers
  • Workstation Conveyors

1. Destackers & Magazine Handlers

Destackers and magazine handlers smoothly load boards onto your line. Magazine handlers automatically load or unload Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) onto and off of the production line. Destackers take individual, bare-bones boards from the bottom of a stack and load them into the line. They can also be used to load circuit boards for second-side assembly tasks.

2. Transfer Conveyors

Transfer conveyors carefully move your PCBs from one machine to another. You can place them virtually anywhere on your Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) production line to link equipment or enable visual inspection. Belt speeds can often be controlled for optimal workflow wherever they are installed.

3. FIFO Buffers

No matter how quick your SMT equipment is, it's easy for things to get unbalanced and bunched up when machines need operator intervention or maintenance. First-in first-out (FIFO) buffers keep printed circuit boards from piling up and causing bottlenecks during these times. These machines often can be switched between FIFO and LIFO (Last In First Out) settings.

4. Diverters & Flippers

What if you need to switch the orientation of your boards between machines? Diverters and flippers rotate the flow or invert boards for transfer or access. If you need to turn boards 90 degrees, for example, or you need access to the underside of double-sided boards, SMT diverters and flippers may be your time-savings solution.

5. Workstation Conveyors

When it's time for hands-on attention, PCB workstation conveyors allow your workers to manually inspect, hand assemble, and make needed repairs without removing the board from the line. This saves time and protects equipment from being accidentally dropped or over-handled.
