Through-hole machines accept through-hole components (axial & radial) taped on reels & ammo packs and insert them into programmed hole locations on a PCB. Hand assembly is often a necessary evil for manufacturers, but component preparation machines (Lead Formers) can greatly increase productivity. Prep machines cut and bend/form leads for hand insertion.
Although widely considered a dying technology, through-hole has persisted because some components are either too costly in surface mount packaging, unable to handle the current in a smt package, or can not handle reflow oven temperatures. Through-hole machines have not changed substantially over the past 15 years. Newer machines will be pc based and use servo motors instead of pneumatics. Although dwindling, there is still active 3rd party support for most through-hole machines.
Most automated through-hole insertion machines are made by either Panasonic or Universal Instruments.
Component prep machines vary in function, but most require tooling for a specific forming requirement. Make sure to check the tooling that comes with the unit. Often the tooling costs will exceed the price of the core unit.
